this is what i just picked up from the grocery store. it cost $32. Thirty. two. dollars. for 1 pineapple, 2 bags of grapes, a small container of raspberries, 1 soft drink and 2/$1 nuts….
do you know how much junk food i could have for $32? do you have any clue how much McDonald’s you can get for $32?
stop shaming fat people poorer than you or people poorer than you in general for not eating healthier. stop lying about how cheap it is or how it’s comparable to fast food. just stop.

Yo I’m all for food being too expensive. I am poor as shit and live paycheck to paycheck on a good month, BUT I hate this mentality that “healthy” food is expensive and unattainable. it is hard work to plan but you can get enough fresh healthy food from your local grocery and farmers market to last for a week and a half (for two people) on about what this food cost the OP. Here are some tips to maximize your buck:
ONLY BUY PRODUCE THAT IS FUCKING IN SEASON AND IS A PRODUCT THAT IS GROWN IN YOUR REGION. This means don’t buy a god damn pineapple unless you live in Hawaii and it’s march-July.
BUY SHIT THAT IS SUSTAINING AND EASILY INTEGRATED INTO RECIPES YA DINGUS. Don’t buy a bunch of grapes. instead of spending 2.99/lb on that useless shit, buy 5 cans of beans for protein and five cans of tomatoes with veggies. Grab some ground turkey (3.99/lb) and a squash (THAT IS IN SEASON; less than $.80) and use half a pound of turkey and some of the cans with some squash for fresh flavor to make a chili that will last 2 people at least 4 meals.
ALWAYS PLAN YOUR SHIT AHEAD OF TIME. KEEP FUCKING TRACK OF WHAT YOU BUY HOW YOU CAN USE ITEMS IN MORE THAN ONE MEAL AND FUCKING RECORD COSTS PER MEAL. I know it’s so fucking hard. After putting in work hours at 3 jobs and going to deal with college shit I don’t feel like doing it either BUT you can’t eat cheaply and stupidly at the same time.
REALLY THE LAST ONE NEEDS TO BE STRESSED. We go through recipes and cross check ingredients/prep time/ how much shit it yields and act accordingly. We track how long the prepared food lasts and make a mental note of how much food we get per meal and how much it costs to feed us per meal.
It’s fucking hard to live poor and it’s some bull shit that we have to work this hard to get decent food but it is possible if you don’t give in to the ease of fast food. Keep going. Keep fighting.

Preach. I was living on $120 every two weeks when I was at Arby’s. But this was chewed down to a measly $80 after other expenses. $80 dollars worth of food that had to last me until two weeks later.
I always bought healthy foods and cooked, fairly, fresh. These foods had to last me until the next paycheck. Soups, chili, and stews man. They really are the best way to go. I would put the majority of my money into ingredients for that and white rice! Don’t be ashamed to get canned or frozen veggies either. (Just because it’s in a can doesn’t mean it’s bad for you!)
For snacks I would still stick to being healthy. Grapes and berries will always be expensive. However, grocery stores always have random sales for things, like buy one pack blueberries get one free. Wait for those. I would always do ten for ten on oranges.
God, and buy lemons! Put lemon in everything. It’s insanely good for you and is an excellent salt substitute if used moderately in recipes. They’re like forty cents each. Buy lots of lemons and garlic.
Another good tip is to freeze your shit! Portion out your stuff. If you don’t think you’ll fully finish that chili, freeze half of it. Eat it whenever. Buy blueberries anyway? Freeze them. Fucking freeze them. Or, watch as your five dollar box quickly turns white and fuzzy. They take about five minutes to thaw out in the open air. They also make a nice frozen snack or cold ingredient for smoothies.
